Identity

As I continue my journey with Jesus, He continually has to remind me of who I am. Often times, it is so easy for me to get caught up in what others think about me and how I feel about myself, therefore neglecting to forget that I am a daughter of the King! Friends, we are sons and daughters of the most high King and we were fearfully and wonderfully made!

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”- 2 Corinthians 5:17

When we make the decision to become followers of Christ, we have been made new. Our sins have been forgiven, our burdens have been lifted, and our chains have been broken. We have received a new identity. We are no longer identified by our dreams, accomplishments, relationships, and past mistakes. We are now followers of Jesus Christ! Everything that we are is wrapped up in Him! This is the end of living for ourselves; our hopes, dreams, and plans. Philippians 3:7-8 says:

“But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ.”

In becoming a follower, my prayers have changed from asking God to fulfill what I want to, “Lord, use me. Let Your will be done. Show me Your will for my life!” I’ve been made aware that that is a dangerous prayer to pray. In asking God for His will to be fulfilled, it can mean trials and often times heartache along the way. James tells us that trials are meant to grow us in our faith and that they produce perseverance and strength. Our personal bumps in the road can be used to point others to Christ.

In the book Not a Fan, by Kyle Idleman, he shares with us that we have been adopted (Ephesians 2:19), chosen (Colossians 3:12), and called (Ephesians 4:1). To think that God has adopted me, chosen me, and called me, blows my mind. That is who I am! I am a called follower of Christ! When we begin to tell ourselves these things, then we live it out. As long as we are down on ourselves and worry about what others think, then that’s who we are. When we begin reminding ourselves that Christ has adopted us and called us to a specific purpose, then we will live that out.

I have an overwhelming peace and joy knowing that Christ has an amazing plan for me and I am confident in who I am in Him. He has a plan for you, too. There is peace on the other side of trust. Are you looking for validation in what others think about you? Do you feel like you’re not good enough? I’m here to tell you, you’re wrong! Jesus died for you! God loves you! You are made in His image! He has a plan for you! You are a child of God! That is your identity.

Are you ready to join me on my journey with Jesus?
