This Christmas season, I have decided to read a chapter of Luke up until Christmas day, as there are twenty-four chapters of Luke. Though I’ve read Luke before, God is showing me things that I’ve never seen before! I’m so thankful that God’s word is living and active!
In today’s reading of Luke chapter six beginning in the sixth verse and ending in the twelfth, Jesus heals a man on the Sabbath whose hand is withered. In Jesus’ day, the religious leaders decided that it would be unlawful to heal on the Sabbath, which was going beyond the commandments of the Bible. As Jesus told the man to stand, knowing the thoughts of the leaders, he said, “I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it? And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other.” (Luke 6:9-10).
While Jesus demonstrated to the religious leaders that there is never a wrong day to do something good, what jumped out at me was the the man’s hand was restored “whole.” Jesus didn’t partially heal the man, Jesus didn’t give the man just a little bit of functionality back in his hand, Jesus complteley healed his hand, that it was just like his other. Jesus completely, totally, enitrely healed the man’s hand; there were no more defects, no more impairments–WHOLE. When Jesus heals, He heals whole.
The woman with the issue of blood knew that if she could touch just the hem of his garment that she would be whole, and she was right, her faith made her whole (Mat. 9:21-22). When Jesus was healing people in Gennesaret, they just wanted to touch the hem of his garment “and as many as touched were made perfectly whole” (Mat. 14:36). In Mark 10:46-52, Jesus healed a blind man named Bartimaeus. Verse 52 says, “And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.” Each of these instances demonstrates that when Jesus heals, Jesus heals whole! I could go on and tell you of different people in the gospels whom Jesus healed, but I encourage you to read through the gospels and find these instances!
When Jesus heals, he doesn’t partially heal, he completely heals. Sometimes this healing can be seen on earth and other times, some don’t receive their complete healing until they’re with Jesus. But no matter how you’re healed, it is always whole. How do I know this? Revelation 21:4 says that in heaven, “God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”
If you’re doubting that God can heal you, I can assure you that He can, because He is the same today as He was when He healed the man with the withered hand. If you’re not “sick,” I’m sure you’ve been touched by someone who is. We all have been touched by sickness in some way, especially in the past few years, but I just want to encourage you that Jesus wholly heals. Is it always God’s will to heal on this side of heaven? No. But I can promise you that if it’s not His will here–for His sovereign reasons–one day, we will all be whole.
If you have any more questions on the topic of healing, I strongly encourage you to read “More Than A Healer: Not The Jesus You Want, But The Jesus You Need.”
