Above All Else

"Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it [are] the issues of life."
-Proverbs 4:23

When we think of guarding our hearts, it’s typical to think about guarding our hearts in a dating relationship. While guarding our hearts in a dating relationship is important, it is just as important to guard our hearts from the temptations and distractions of this world.

In Mark 7:16-20, Jesus said,

"Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man."

These sinful thoughts can be credited to our sin nature and what we allow to enter our hearts. In the day we live in, we have so may temptations and distractions at our fingertips. The enemy will use any distraction possible to corrupt our hearts; whether it be a television show, a movie, music, or a social media network. Friend, please don’t allow anything to corrupt your heart! Be on guard! Watch and pray! I am telling these things to myself, as well! As Paul put in in 1 Timothy 1:15, I am the chief of sinners! I struggle with the same things you do!

Guard your heart and draw near to the one who created it; Jesus bought you with a price and loves you oh so deeply! We have been saved and set apart! May we purify our hands and cleanse our hearts (James 4:8)!

I think the lyrics of this song sum it up. I encourage you to intently listen to the words of this song. “Guard your heart, lock the door and hide the key from the enemy.”
