Am I Worthy?

During my quiet time last week, I was reading John chapter 1 and something from this passage has ministered to my heart. As I began verse 19, the Scriptures began to speak of John the Baptist, Jesus’ cousin. People began to ask John who he was and he had to make it clear that he was “not the Christ” (v. 20). But verse 27 really caught my attention; John says,

“He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose.”

Wow. John the Baptist, the prophet, who Jesus Himself said there was none born from women greater than him (Luke 7:28), was not even worthy to unloose his shoes, which was the lowest/least of acts a servant could do for their master.

This passage of Scripture greatly humbled my heart. To know that I am not even worthy to unloose my Master’s sandals reminds me of the power, holiness, and might of Jesus. He is so mighty and so much greater than me. His ways and thoughts are higher than mine (Isa. 55:8-9). He is worthy, though I am not.

Oh God, thank You for Your might and power. Help me to daily humble myself under your mighty hand and take up my cross and follow you. May I always remember who You are and the power of Your might. God, You alone are worthy! There is none beside thee! I praise You and thank You for who You are, Sweet Jesus.
