Most of you probably know the story of the Prodigal Son from Luke 15:11-32, if you do not, take the time to read it before you continue reading.
The past week I’ve watched a particular Gaither video repetitively knowing that God was trying to teach me something through it, but last night it finally clicked.
One of the singers, Michael English had an extramarital affair, became addicted to drugs and alcohol, and lost everything he had, including his career. No one would play his music and he was no longer invited to sing anywhere. Long story short, he repented from his sin and got right with God and was invited back to sing at Gaither Homecomings and eventually, the Vocal Band. During this particular video, Bill Gaither welcomed him back and he sang the song “Lord, Feed Your Children.” While he was singing this song, people in the crowd were weeping. After the song was over people continued crying and he made his way to Vestal Goodman crying and she wrapped her arms around him while he cried on her shoulder and proceeded to wipe his tears. Isn’t this what God does for us? When we stray and then come home, his arms are open wide and he wipes our tears.
I can’t help but believe this instance is a visual example of what the body of Christ is supposed to do when prodigals come home; we’re supposed to welcome them back with open arms, cry happy tears, and rejoice in their return and God’s redemption.
I myself began to weep as I saw this prodigal come home and the people cry over the return of their brother from a season of addiction and sin. You could see that these singers had truly taken on the burden of their brother’s sin and could not be happier about his return. To this day, Michael English is still carrying on a career as a singer and is telling his story of redemption. What the devil meant for harm, God meant for good; the prodigal came home.
Take a few moments to watch this video. I hope it ministers to you as it did to me.
